What size images can I post to Instagram?
You can share square, landscape (horizontal) and portrait (vertical) images to Instagram.
Images shared to Instagram do not need to be a specific size, as long as the aspect ratio is between 0.8 and 1.91. In a nutshell, your images can't be very wide or very tall.
But don't let this fancy terminology confuse you! Aspect ratio is just the ratio between the image's width and height and you can find this out by dividing the width by the height.
For example, if your image is 1000 x 1200 pixels then you would find out the aspect ratio by:
1000 ÷ 1200 = 0.83 (aspect ratio)
A square image, on the other hand, has an aspect ratio of 1:1 because both the width and height is the same.
Recommended Image Sizes
Here are some examples of image sizes that work nicely when posted to Instagram:
Square Images
You can post any size square image that has the same width and height. For example: 600 x 600 pixels, 900 x 900 pixels, 1200 x 1200 pixels, etc.
The square ready-made social media images available for download on Healthinomics are 900 x 900 pixels or 1080 x 1080 pixels.
Portrait Images
- 700 x 800 pixels (aspect ratio 0.875)
- 1000 x 1200 pixels (aspect ratio 0.83)
- 1200 x 1500 pixels (aspect ratio 0.8)
Landscape Images
- 800 x 600 pixels (aspect ratio 1.33)
- 1200 x 800 pixels (aspect ratio 1.5)
- 1500 x 1200 pixels (aspect ratio 1.25)
Your images do not need to be any of the one sizes mentioned above, these are just examples. As long as the width of your image divided by the height of your image is between 0.8 and 1.91, you're good to go! 😉
